This classification of the mosses is based on Goffinet, B., W.R Buck and A.J. Shaw (2008), Morphology and classification of the Bryophyta, in Goffinet & Shaw (eds.) Bryophyte Biology 2nd edition, p. 55–138, Cambridge University Press. The site is maintained by B. Goffinet and W. R. Buck.
The current version differs from the one proposed by Goffinet et al. (2008), in the rank used to distinguish the main lineages. We have adopted the ranking proposed by Stech & Frey (2008: Nova Hedwigia 86: 1–21) and adapted our classification accordingly (see Goffinet et al. 2010), although some of the changes then proposed were ultimately reversed based on the recent study by Liu et al. (2019).
We have also corrected some of the authorities listed by us for supraordinal taxa, and followed Stech and Frey (2008) who correctly identified the earliest combinations.
BG and WRB continuously seek to incorporate recent systematic concepts in this on-line version. We are grateful to the webmaster to TROPICOS, a database essential to identify recently described generic and supra generic taxa.
We hope that this on-line version will be useful. We see it as a community effort and would appreciate receiving reprints of publications proposing new phylogenetic relationships or systematic affinities of moss genera in order to continuously update the classification. Ultimately we hope to annotate the classification with references to studies focusing on the circumscription of suprageneric taxa.
